#1. When implementing differential reinforcement for a replacement behavior, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is designing the intervention. Assuming all other aspects of the intervention are perfectly implemented, what is the most critical consideration regarding the reinforcement delivered for the replacement behavior?
In the context of differential reinforcement the primary aim is to strengthen a desired replacement behavior While the magnitude or strengthamount of a reinforcer can certainly impact its effectiveness and how quickly a behavior is acquired or maintained it is not universally the most important factor The two paramount considerations for effective reinforcement are consistent delivery and control Consistent delivery ensures that the desired behavior is reliably followed by reinforcement establishing a strong and predictable contingency Control means preventing bootleg or unauthorized reinforcement for the undesirable behavior and ensuring that the planned contingencies are the only ones operating If reinforcement is delivered inconsistently or if the client can access reinforcement for the undesirable behavior outside of the intervention the magnitude of the planned reinforcer becomes less significant However if a chosen reinforcer of low magnitude is not effective then increasing its magnitude would be a logical step indicating that magnitude can be important in certain situations Thus consistent delivery and control are foundational with magnitude being an adjustable factor when necessary
